The Future of Healthy Living

I recently had the pleasure of running into an old friend of mine, Dr. Vladimir Turovsky of the Center for Integrative Medicine here in Aventura, and when I heard what he has created at his Biscayne Blvd. Clinic, I knew I had to share it with all Aventura residents.

It is apparent that residents of Aventura take healthy living seriously. Whether it’s the Country Club Drive circle that is always bursting with people running, walking, cycling, and rollerblading; or that we have not one but two health food markets, it is clear that the residents of Aventura have a conscious mind toward a healthy lifestyle. Yes, we strive to be physically fit and we enjoy fine meals, but how aware are we that our moods and our emotions are key factors, along with nutrition and exercise, in preventative medicine?

Since 1995 Dr. Turovsky has been helping people relieve pain and suffering with Oriental Medicine including acupuncture, physical therapy, natural herbs, and other remedies. His clinic welcomed and rehabilitated many people who were ailing after treatment in western medicine like pharmaceuticals, surgeries, etc.

Since I know Dr. Vladimir personally, I can share with you that he decided to become a Doctor of Oriental Medicine when he saw firsthand how acupuncture and proper diet helped his mother overcome serious health issues that brought her in and out of the hospital for months. There was no denying the positive change in his mothers’ health and quality of life. That’s when Vladimir realized that alternative health care is complimentary to western medicine and, in some cases, preferable.

As he explains, most people see acupuncture therapy as a last resort, something to try when all else fails! If they had only come to him as one of their first options of medicine, they may have not needed to suffer as long as they did. In fact, there are early warning signs of illness that we should be mindful of. Addiction and urges towards an unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, overeating) are symptoms of emotional unrest that if left unchecked will lead to serious health complications.

With this in mind, Dr Vladimir teamed up with several like-minded professionals, therapists, nutritionists, even a minister, to offer a comprehensive preventative health care clinic right here in Aventura. Their mission is to heal the hurt before it becomes chronic or irreparable. Services include a two-hour smoking cessation treatment and they guarantee you’ll walk out of the clinic a non-smoker. They also have had great success with weight reduction, even offering an appetite suppression treatment for those who “just want to lose a few pounds”. And there are no unwanted side effects with their therapies as nothing synthetic is introduced into the body.

For those of you who are afraid of needles, they now use state of the art lasers to treat a variety of conditions, including cravings for nicotine, fat, and sugar. Classical Acupuncture and Laser Therapy help the body be and do what it’s supposed to, naturally.

The clinic still treats pain and ailments but hopes to expand its reach into the healthy living community and to educate the public on the benefits of taking care of our moods and emotions before they cause disease in the body. They even offer a 20 minute anxiety/stress relief therapy. Workaholics can schedule one on their lunch break.
Their combination of consultation and treatment make for unparalleled service and professionalism. The moment you meet Vladimir and his partners, you feel their warmth and heartfelt desire to assist you in living the best life possible.
For more information, please visit their websites:

Traffic Safety Camera Program

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - (Business Wire) The City of Aventura, Florida has signed a contract making American Traffic Solutions its first-ever vendor for the city’s traffic safety camera program. All the systems will be equipped with ATS’ latest ultra high resolution digital cameras.

CLICK TO READ MORE ABOUT DIGITAL CAMERAS IN AVENTURA

What's happening to Aventura? Camera are NOT the answer to traffic issues. Does this mean that the City might gain revenue from the traffic tickets they can mail drivers because they were caught violating on camera or is it to have a record of accidents and jams that occur? Either way this does not solve our traffic problem.

One main source of traffic is the popular Aventura Mall. This mall is even more popular since Nordstrom was built. I think that the Aventura Mall should CHARGE for parking. This will eliminate the people that come to the mall just to hang out or window shop. I imagine there's a large percentage of people that would stop driving through Aventura if the mall was not a FREE destination. Let's be honest, the shops won't miss any of that business and then just maybe we'll have less traffic around town. I don't mind paying $5.00 for parking, would you?

Do you have any suggestions? What do you think about these new digital traffic cameras?

Hotels in Aventura Florida

Announced today...ALOFT HOTEL IS COMING TO AVENTURA FLORIDA. Starwood has partnered with Cabi Aventura Hotel, LLLP and Aventura Development to develop aloft Aventura, which is expected to open in 2008.

Aloft Hotel is part of the first rate Starwood Hotels and Resorts. There was an awesome article on HotelInteractive.com explaining the new venture. It gives a detailed account about the area and the two companies.

Here's a few key statements from the article, read more about the Aloft Aventura

Centrally located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Aventura is known as a golf haven given its vast selection of courses. Just minutes from world-famous South Beach, The community offers balmy weather, beautiful parks and easy access to Miami Seaquarium, Coral Gables, Hollywood Greyhound Track, and the Aventura Mall – a 2.4 million square foot retail center with fine dining, high-end shopping and movies. Close to both the Miami International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, aloft Aventura will feature 215 rooms and 5,000 square feet of meeting space.

“With its urban chic and lively social atmosphere, aloft Aventura will provide a fresh, new lodging alternative for both business and leisure travelers to the Miami area,” said Brian McGuinness, Vice President of aloft and element hotels worldwide. “Like aloft, Aventura is rich with the energy of discovery and interaction, and we’re excited to introduce our forward-thinking new brand to one of South Florida’s most beautiful communities.”

About Cabi Developers

In the meantime, here are the great hotels in Aventura

Feb. 20th 2007 Email Question

Brian Columbus, Founder & CEO of Homeperks.com

What do you think of the hotel?

I haven't been to any Aloft hotels, so I can't comment on that chain of Starwood Hotels. I have been to the W Hotels and they're amazing. Since these are rumored to be mini W hotels, I'm sure it will be a perfect addition to the City of Aventura. A great addition to the short list of hotels in 33180.

Is it a good fit for Aventura?

Aventura has traffic issues, so more development will likely create more traffic problems. That being said, I'm sure a specialty hotel will be a successful project in Aventura. This is because Aventura demands first rate services to cater to the luxury condo community in the surrounding area. The recent 125 million dollar Aventura Mall expansion of expensive designer shops is proof that Aventura is not slowing down its need for luxury services. I think that the Starwood Cabi venture is a perfect match for Aventura and will likely be a destination for tourists that want to stay in Aventura during their visits to South Florida.

Nordstrom Aventura Mall

Today Nordstrom is open in Aventura Mall. Many Aventura residents have been waiting for this day since it was announced that Nordstrom Aventura was planned to open. This is the new hotspot in Aventura and this weekend it will likely be packed with shoppers. The Sun Sentinel ran a great article about the new Aventura Nordstrom location.

Here's a excerpt from that article...

Store amenities include an in-house tailor shop, shoeshine stand, personal shopping services, coffee bar and light-fare bistro. The Nordstrom Aventura also has a few unique characteristics not found at the chain's other area locations such as beauty department boutiques by Japanese cosmetic retailer Shu Uemura and Chanel. Shoe fanatics will notice collections by designers such as Jimmy Choo, Dolce & Gabbana, Manolo Blahnik, Prada and others. And luxury shoppers will find brands including Burberry, Burberry Prorsum, Jean Paul Gaultier and Versace.

"We're so looking forward to opening Friday," said Nordstrom spokesman John Bailey. "Our goal is to open stores in the best markets and the best locations, and Aventura Mall is definitely one of those places."

I agree with the statement of John Bailey; however, it's just a nicer way to say, "we're in business to make a profit." Look around the Aventura Mall and you'll see so much open space that is now utilized for parking lots. I think that's just going to be developed like Nordstrom once the Nordstrom craze ends. There are many department stores that have still not hit the Aventura Mall and there's room for more - Saks Fifth Avenue is just one name.

The article continued to say...

The whole philosophy of the mall is to have different things for different people," said Turnberry Associates Founder and Managing Partner Donald Soffer. Since the mall opened in spring 1983, Soffer added, "We've created a magnet for people of every lifestyle."

The Nordstrom wing will host several tenants who are opening up sprawling "flagship" stores that enable them to carry more exclusive lines. For example, coming soon are a 30,000-square-foot Forever XXI store, which sells fashion to young adults, and a Calvin Klein "white label" store with more than 10,000-square-feet of clothing and accessories.

Gilly Hicks, the new Abercrombie & Fitch store concept, will have its first South Florida store there, as will Ferrari and Hugo Boss. Coming to the United States for the first time, according to mall officials, are Astoria, and La Martina, which sell women's and men's apparel. The wing also includes an Equinox fitness center and Ocean Prime, a fine-dining restaurant.

Aventura Mall celebrates its 25th anniversary of business in April, and this year owners plan to add to the store roster 7 for all Mankind, Cut & Sew by Marc Ecko, and Karen Millen of England — all of which are new to South Florida — as well as other popular brands such as Kate Spade, Hollister and Oakley. Both Apple and Koko & Palenki are planning expansions this year. And The Grill on the Alley, a fine-dining establishment from Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, will open its first South Florida location at the mall.

Usually the movies are packed with people, so in order to get tickets to regular movie showtimes I suggest checking for movie showtimes in Aventura mall on the AMC website. Take a look at this link with the showtimes and feature films in AMC 24 Aventura. The tickets for this screening are limited seating and getting a ticket does not mean you get a seat, so if you get a ticket get there early.The screening is on Tuesday, February 19th at AMC 24 Aventura at 7:30 pm.

BE KIND REWIND

(Release Date: February 22, 2008)

Director: Michel Gondry

Jack Black stars in Be Kind Rewind, a one-of-a-kind comedy from the mind of writer/director Michel Gondry (Dave Chappelle's Block Party, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). Black stars as a loveable loser stuck in a life that's too small for his big dreams. But when he unintentionally erases all the tapes in a video store where his best friend works, he devises a plan to satisfy the store's few loyal customers by re-creating and re-filming every movie they decide to rent. Be Kind Rewind features a cast that includes Mos Def, Danny Glover, and Mia Farrow. It is scheduled for a February 22, 2008 release.

I expect this film to be hilarious and well worth seeing. Check out the official Be Kind Rewind website. There's a lot of cool stuff on the website, here's a direct link to the trailer of the movie. If you're interested in getting tickets to this screening please send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you soon and seeing you at the movies.

Warren Buffett Talks Municipal Bonds

In effort to keep Aventura, Florida residents up to date with business news and important headlines, I posted today's news about Warren Buffett as reported on ChicgacoTribune.com

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said Tuesday that he has offered to help out troubled bond insurers by offering a second level of insurance on up to $800 billion in municipal bonds.

In an interview on CNBC, Buffett said his Berkshire Hathaway holding company made the offer of reinsurance to bond insurers Ambac Financial Group Inc., MBIA Inc. and Financial Guaranty Insurance Co. Buffett said one firm rejected his offer, and he was still waiting to hear from the other two. He did not say which was which.

Many have speculated Buffett could step in and help out the troubled industry, though he made clear his offer was not altruistic.

"When I go to St. Peter I will not present this as some act that will entitle me to get in," Buffett said on CNBC. "We're doing this to make money."

Scott Baio Reality Television

What's Wrong with America Part 2

Submitted by: Jonathan Randall, New York City comedian

Remember the happy old days when Scott Baio looked up to the Fonz,loved Joni, and was on the cover of enough teen magazines to cover the rooms of every 16-year-old girl who ever dreamed of getting breast enlargements?

Well before you go and list that Chachi lunch box on E-bay and find those old Scott Baio records. Just realize that Scott Baio is 46 and exploiting his unborn child and past celebrity to be relevant in today's reality obsessed world.

After spending over a decade clinging not so much to his past glory as a sitcom star but rather to the fact that he was a guy who nailed Pamela Anderson, Heather Locklear and countess other sluts, Baio proves that all washed up actors need to do when they cant get work is star in a reality show about how pathetic they are cause they cant get work. After all the only thing we Americans love more than a star is a
fallen star. We love to rubberneck the train wreck until it is so horribly disturbing that we actually start to feel better about our lives.

The second season of Scott's reality show is currently airing on VH1, which has gone from playing crappy music to airing reality shows starring people no one even really cared about when they were famous. The show follows as he attempts to deal with the trials and tribulations of getting married and having a baby when you are rich and irrelevant. On one episode TV viewers got to watch a sonogram of Baio's unborn daughter, making her the first fetus reality star… and you thought your mom showing people your naked baby pictures was embarrassing. I am glad that Scott is giving his daughter a head start on becoming the coke-snorting stripper she is destined to be.

Watching the show you would almost think it was all scripted, but after viewing one "Charles in Charge" rerun you will realize Scott is not that good of an actor. The main plot of the show is that Baio is having a terribly hard time accepting his new role as a soon to be husband and father. Apparently the only thing that will ease the transition from being a douche bag to being a douche bag with a wife and kid is his own reality show. It is riveting television that really makes you wonder what Boner from "Growing Pains" is up to these days.

When looking at Baio's body of work its hard to believe that Baio was once so popular that he got his dick wet in every hot wannabe actress and playboy playmate that that had a subscription to Tiger Beat. Today, "stars" like Paris Hilton and Lindsy Lohan wouldn't even let him pick up their herpes medication. The only good thing that could come from a reality show that reminisces about being a misogynistic
scumbag and complains about not being ready for fatherhood is hope for Joey Lawrence. Hopefully this will be the last we see of Baio, but with the ridiculous amount of crap on VH1 don't be surprised if the show goes on for another 30 years when it be will called Scott Baio is 76 divorced, decrepit, and trying to get in the pants of his daughter's friends.

Haran Yaffe "BOKER TEL AVIV"

Haran Yaffe, Israeli musician, stayed at an Aventura hotel during his visit to South Florida. I spoke with him regarding his music and his thoughts about Aventura. He really enjoyed the City of Aventura and is very excited about getting the word out about his hit song "Boker Tel Aviv." Haran's hometown is Tel Aviv, Israel. He looks forward to his next visit to Florida and hopes that Americans visit Tel Aviv to experience his amazing city.

I've been to Tel Aviv and have experienced the lively spirit of that city. His song captures that feeling.

Glenn Fenster rides for epilepsy

We posted an amazing story about a man that biked from Alaska to Aventura. In case you missed it take a look at
http://cityofaventura.blogspot.com/2007/10/alaska-to-aventura.html

This post is a follow up to that story.

An announcement from Aventura's Glenn Fenster...

My son Nyle was diagnosed with Epilepsy when he was two years old. Since then, he has had hundreds of seizures. He has them everyday. They occur when he sleeps. Five years ago on the tennis court he went for a shot and a seizure occurred. He fell to the ground hard. By the time I got to him running as fast as I could the seizure had ended. I gave out my hand to help him up. He refused any help. I asked him, "How do you keep getting up"? He answered, "Dad, I've never seen you stay down." I decided right there I would do something that would raise the awareness of all who suffer from seizures the courage my son shows.

Days later I had a plan. I decided to bike from Seattle to Miami (47 days) 4036 miles completed in 2006. In 2007 I biked (65 days) 6200 miles from Alaska to Miami. This year I will bike 8100 miles. One might think the most difficult challenge would be the training. Day after day, riding mile after mile, cycling in rain, wind, heat, darkness. One might think it would be the terrain. Unable to practice in the mountains, they are a struggle to climb. One might think it's the 50 pounds extra of supplies I have to carry. One might think it would be the exhaustion I feel. One might think it is the loneliness of the asphalt. But no, the most difficult challenge for me is being away from my son.

It is my goal by 2010 to have raised $250,000. I want to send children like my son to Epilepsy supported summer camps throughout America and Canada. I want to break down the walls of stigma associated with Epilepsy. I do this to show everyone that no matter what disability of the mind or body, anything can be accomplished. That my son is like you and I. Epilepsy is what he has, Not who he is.

From Denver to Miami (The Long Way) - One Man’s 8100 Mile Bicycle Journey for Epilepsy

On April 28thth, 2008 Glenn Fenster will embark on a 8100 mile bicycle journey from Denver, Colorado to Miami, Florida (the Long Way).

Denver
Phoenix
LA
SF
Seattle
Vancouver
Calgary
Toronto
NY
Philadelphia
Atlanta
Orlando
Miami

His inspiration and reason for this ambitious undertaking is his 14 year-old son, Nyle, who has suffered from acute epilepsy since he was just two years old. Glenn is riding to show his son that no matter what the disability, everyone has the capacity to reach for their dreams. He does not ride just for his son, but for other kids and adults living with epilepsy.

In 2006 Glenn biked 4036 miles from Seattle Washington to Miami Florida, to promote epilepsy awareness, with the support of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida. Last year’s ride from Alaska added another 2500 miles to his journey, along with the challenges of the ‘northern climate’, which can be unpredictable and definitely much colder then what he experienced previously. According to Mr. Fenster, “This trip pales in comparison to the courage my son and others exhibit each day”.

Follow the journey and show your support at his website, www.destinymaker.org

Williams Island 4000

UPDATE: February 17, 2008 We received many emails asking about condos for sale at Williams Island, because this page is highly ranked in Google. In response, we have provided a list of Williams Island condos for sale in building 4000. To read about the ART SHOW scroll down.

* Williams Island 1000
* Williams Island 2000
* Williams Island 2600
* Williams Island 2800
* Williams Island 3000
* Williams Island 4000
* Williams Island 6000 Bella Mare
* Williams Island 7000
* Mediterranean Village
* Villa Flora

I was unable to post the last couple of days. I know that everyone is anticipating this last post regarding the art show at the condos of Williams Island. The 4000 building was a spectacular event in itself. The concierge, Gregory Parker, did an amazing job setting up this show for the residents of the 4000 building and for all those visiting from the other towers on the Island. This show had first rate artists, delicious food, and even entertainment.

When I walked through the automatic doors at the entrance, I was immediately confronted with an oversized canvas of multi-colored buttons by Billy Monsalve Duffo. This painting demanded the attention of everyone that entered the 4000 building. I got that good feeling you get when you find a button that's missing from a shirt. You know, when you're about to go to a party and put on a your shirt and a button is missing. You realize that you don't have extra buttons and then, like a miracle, the button appears on the floor just in time for you to sew it back on so you can where the shirt. That's a great feeling, right?

In addition to the buttons, Duffo had several large pieces of work featured below.

http://www.mduffo.com/

Antonio Guerrero had a large collection on display. His work contained a lot of energy and the images appeared to pop off the canvas. The guests were amazed by the three dimensional illusions in his work.

The artist featured below had a detailed collection of prints with of a romantic bull fighting theme.

The residents also enjoyed saki lemon drops and salmon served by Lola's on Harrison. Heather Keenly, general manager, spoke with the guests as they enjoyed the tasty and fresh samplers. Rachel Ura, prepared the lemon drops that were a hit in the 4000 lobby.

Heather is pictured above preparing the food, while Rachel creates the signature saki shots.

http://www.lolasonharrison.com/

Pictured above is the Lola's menu displayed with Rogue beer. The moment I saw the Rogue I knew that this is a restaurant for me. I'm a fan of Rogue beer because of its unique variety of flavors. This type of beer is usually not served at restaurants. The decision to serve high quality beers captured my attention and caused me to go there for dinner the following evening. I had an amazing spinach salad and enjoyed a fun beer flight. A detailed review of my dining experience will come in a later post. In the meantime, I highly reccomend you visit Lola's at 2032 Harrison Street Hollywood, Florida 33020 phone number - 954.927.9851.

Needless to say, this show at the Williams Island 4000 condo was a great success. This could not have been possible without the efforts and organizational skills of Gregory Parker, 4000 concierge. Pictured below is Gregory alongside Ivette Vinas, the talented entertainer that performed in the front of the 4000 building. Take a look at her Myspace page - www.myspace.com/ivettejazz
